just in case my EI representative is reading my blog ..yes i reported my work and income on my cards for this week

a day at jef's with robbie .... |
|
up and out the door before 830am ....off to trenton w/ robbie to jam a few songs at jef's house ...
each tim hortons drive thru we passed was slammed so we waited til we hit trenton, home of 7 tim hortons and 15000 people (in comparison, kingston has 15 locations and more than 150,000 people)
both of us grew up in trenton ...so whenever we come back to visit we we drive around a bit ...mostly to remind ourselves why we left or to see what's been torn down or replaced by a walmart.
we arrived at jef's, loaded in and got set up ... as always we shot the shit for a bit before jammin' ... then jammed for a good while ... taking breaks to talk about music, bands, computers, and other usual topics...
as we get ready to finish jay's record, we're all having a lot of fun experimenting with everyone's songs and jamming them over and over ...spending today with jef / rob was another reminder of why i love to play so much.
now back home for band rehearsal...

sarah slean @ the grand theatre |
|
i'd been looking forward to this show since i first saw sarah at elixir in november ... she didn't seem to like the elixir very much then ... and it was apparent this time as she took a couple pokes at the club ('oh this certainly isn't the elixir is it ..it's much nicer here ...) but... the grand theatre is so amazing you can't really blame her for preferring it over elixir (she just didn't have to slag the club, imo). i've seen a few shows here and never been disappointed. even the lobby sounds good ...when betablokka went to record an acoustic song there using the grand piano out in the lobby, it sounded great (although their piano was out of tune at the time )
doors 7pm and shit was prompt ... jeremy fisher came on solo and started the evening off nicely with a short but very interesting set ... his harmonica holder slipping halfway through a solo in the 2nd or 3rd song, he stopped and embarassingly acknowledged the crowds patience and then casually signaled for his nonexistant band to strike up again and continued the solo and finished the song ... a wonderful crowd response for him here too. i've been a fan of his for a while but hadn't seen him on previous trips here. really great show... hope he comes back with a full band soon. i missed his k-rock interview/performance but hopefully the radio station will have it online at some point.
jorane came on next and with her cello and her voice she made me uncomfortable in my seat with her absolutely brilliant performance ... the music was creepy / interesting / rocking / intelligent and then goofy ... i was just so taken by her voice and her presence on stage ...another great opener ... short intermission and then time for sarah
chris had comp'd steph and i our tickets for working a couple shows for him recently ... and fantastic seats ..second row middle of the stage ... for jeremy fisher and jorane there was no one seated in front of me ...unfortuantely that someone took their seat at intermission ...i moved over a few seats towards the aisle to shoot sarah's set as the piano was set up on an angle ... the ushers were strict about flash photography (not that i ever use at shows anyway) but the people in the front row didn't turn their flash off so i had heat a few times from the usher ...i convinced them it wasn't me and shot a couple of pics for each song.
i forgot my palm pilot and i didn't have a pen so i don't have a setlist from the show ..if anyone has one please leave it in the comments section for me. mary, california and an acoustic version of duncan were the highlights for me. the theatre sounded so good tonight you could hear her lips smacking between lyrics and a pin drop in the audience (a nice change from the chatty cathy's at club shows usually)
seeing her for a second time was a treat ... not only did i know the songs more but the performance was spotless again ...and her banter was great ..stories about her grandmother and misc. men that served purposes in her life for short times but have gone away ...animals and love lost ... she's so quirky and cute.
probably my favorite shows of the last year...

so what have i been up to .... |
|
It's been an interesting but good time, the last few months that is... there's a few things i miss these days, sometimes, but i try not to dwell on them ...
i've reaquianted myself with my life (and my cats) and have been in my rehearsal room playing drums almost every day ... (thanks for the advice K!) ...in between drumming and building a couple websites for friends i've been looking for a job. i might actually go into my career field on a casual basis...
i've been rehearsing with a broken down kit featuring my snare drum case as a kickdrum (pic in my 'misc images' gallery) ...and have been trying to learn to play a little more with brushes / bundles a bit more. songs take on interesting lives when you've got kick/snare/hat/splash cymbal. jay harris has been rehearsing here for the last while and we've gone to acoustic guitars and a small bass amp with the broken down kit ...it's a ton of fun. but man i can't wait to play as a loud band again.
i'm still playing with jay harris ... he's brought up the idea of using the band to finish recording his cd as the guys he was using to record are incredibly busy and he's itchin' to get a cd out.
this seems common to most people, but with some artists the live act never actually sees the recording studio (mostly pop/country artists - lots of producers prefer to use experienced session players and sometimes artists don't have much say under the producer until they've got a series of 'hits' under their belt - tim mcgraw finally got to use his band on his 5th or 6th studio record - but will avril's live band ever record with her?) ...so being asked to play on the record is a total treat. since i joined the band i've been learning material from demos / recordings ... and any new songs that were written i'd get a copy of to learn from. Jay's bringing in new songs a few at a time these days ... and in the last couple of months we've all been a bit more responsibility for coming up with our own parts.
a rehearsal space to call our own is something we need to find ... so if you have a decent sized / somewhat warm space out there to rent us ... call me
so that pretty much sums up what i've been up to ... that and i redesigned the site and finally found a blog script that installs easily and has all the basic features i wanted... so i'm gonna use it
cheers |

another new blog ... |
|
this is my 4th or 5th attempt at installing a decent blog script on my site and i think i might have found one i like a lot. although it doesn't have RSS feed capability ... it's about the easiest script to install / config that i could find with the basic features in wanted.
so let's hope this one stays... i'm getting sick of losing my posts heheh |
