It's the first really nice weekend of Spring here ...finally.
Snuffy and I decided to go to the open house at the old Whig Building downtown (home of the Kingston Whig Standard for about 100 years). Camera in hand, off we went. KinCore Properties have renovated the entire building (including the old ontario bank that was attached to the whig building) and had opened it up to the public today. They did an amazing job. Old and new combined - an office space that i'd love to work in.
There's a new rooftop garden/patio on the building ...and the view of the market and city hall is so great. I've seen pictures on old postcards and at the archives in the university but to be up there and get to shoot a few myself was very neat. lucky tenants who get to use that as their place to relax during work.
The main floor is apparently going to be a Keg Restaurant - and the office space on the 2nd-4th floors will be office space - there's a model suite on the second floor - great use of the really large old windows. They've left the brick with the old advertising printed on what used to be the outside of the building (prior to a 1940's building addition that connected the Ontario Bank and the Whig Building) both sides of the building are great spaces with an abundance of huge windows and very high ceilings ...the 4th floor front office has a skylight in the corner.
I shot a shitload of pics and listened to some people talk about working the radio station and newspaper and where things were located in the building at that time. I think I'll go hunt down some pictures of the 'newsroom' or pics from inside the building ...I bet Jack Chiang has a bunch.
Mr. Chiang, if you're reading my blog ...can you help?
You never know ... I read his blog (newspaper column) all the time.
