out with the old ... in with the booze! |
|
LISTENING TO: 02-foo_fighters_-_doa_(demo).mp3
whatever it is you're doing tonight ... please do it safely. leave your car keys at home unless you're abstaining (and how many of you reading this will be doing THAT tonight?) and put your housekey on a string around your neck. clean underpants are also a must.
it's drunken debauchery night with a few friends for us ... could be a verrry long day tomorrow (i haven't got my liquor on in a while).
time for an early morning photo walk ... |

back on the throne... |
|
LISTENING TO: justin bird - misc unlabelled mp3 tracks
having your heart broken always sucks. even though i'm not the most emotional guy (some might even say callous and/or robotic) leaving my last band hurt. i promised myself if my reputation didn't preceed me and i found another gig i'd float along for the ride and not get personally or emotionally involved. sex without love so to speak... although the one night stand ritual isn't my style ... it saves broken hearts and friendships. when you're really passionate about what you do, every bit of yourself goes into whatever you're doing ...to the point of not caring about yourself personally. another lesson learned.
so ... having lamented on my mistakes (and maybe a little personal discovery here and there) i can move on. (maybe a moment of silence for my emotions as i tuck them away again)
justin bird's keyboard player called last week to see if i was available to fill the drumstool. fuzzy gave me a headsup that he accepted a new job, leaving little time for him to play with justin (congrats on the new job fuz and thanks for the recommendation).
after meeting with the band (except justin who's not back in town yet) i've accepted the offer and i'm in the midst of charting and rehearsing a couple cds worth of demos. the music is interesting, a bowie kinda vibe to a lot of it. i'm excited to get back into playing ... i've missed it more this last year than i thought i would.
fuzzy's gonna do as many of the january gigs as he can and will most likely complete the recording that's underway ... so i've got a bit of time (although i've been warned that i might get called sooner if fuzzy can't make a couple of the shows lined up)
...i finally get to play with mike perlin... hot damn ...and it'll be nice to play drums and not care about any of the other stuff involved with the business of being in a band. someone else can have the headaches of that shit.
oooh oooh ... and my new lenses are here for my camera a .5x wide angle and 2x telephoto (giving me a 6x optical zoom now) |

LISTENING TO: the catherine wheel - show me mary
i'm a photoshop guy ... everything i shoot gets post processed, even if it's just a quick pass with the smart sharpen filter or a b/w conversion plug-in. i go to extremes sometimes like selective-color shots but this is a crazy photoshop job ... 20 hours of work on the model. it's very nice work, i admit, but i think they should put a disclaimer or warning label on the magazine cover (remember homer's safety mission?)...maybe images may not appear exactly as photographed or prolonged viewing of photographs may cause psychological damage or eating disorders. ...let's use pictures like the cigarette companies have to also ... maybe a teenage girl holding another girls hair back for her as she vomits in the school washroom.
no wonder there's millions of teenage girls pukin' and starving their way to the body they see on the magazine covers ...they shaved off quite a bit of her midsection. i'd say at least 10 milkshakes worth.
it kinda makes me think that everyone who thinks they need to lose 5 lbs should shake their media festered heads for a second, or learn some photoshop before they send out pics of themselves heheh. living a healthy lifestyle makes sense ... obsessing over 5 lbs seems pointless to me. i'd think that people who acknowledge they have a serious weight issue (not 5 lbs) don't think they need to lose weight to fit into a tighter fitting pair of pants or a shorter skirt ...they're usually more concerned with not having a heart attack or being able to watch their children grow up.
so go have a milkshake after your workout today ...and don't throw it up. they're going to photoshop you anyway. |

always an adventure when derek comes to town |
|
LISTENING TO: minus the bear - drilling
our story begins late wednesday night (re: thursday morning 4:26am)
CALLER ID DISPLAY: BELL PAYPHONE 548-0534
snuffy: *waking* wtf?
snoshi: *half asleep still* probably robbie ...hello wtf?
derek: shayne ... oh thank god. i'm soooo sorry ...it's derek man ... i got into town tonight and i can't get into where i'm supposed to stay and i'm freezing to death, i've been out here since last call trying to get them on the phone.
snoshi: you know where i live dude, door will be open in a moment.
a few minutes later, huddled in front of our little space heater and a cup of tea, derek spilled forth a tale of arriving in town, taking in the grad club benefit show, drinking and hanging out with friends, wandering, and discussions with the police about vagrancy; before deciding it would be a really good idea to call me cause i'd probably be home. d crashed and i stayed up to work on some images.
in the afternoon i framed everyone's christmas presents while d did the internet thing and made cover art for the first few copies of a newly recorded EP he brought with him to make some eating money ... complete with christmas giftwrap.
*pretend this space was about our evening visit to robbie g's to exchange gifts*
*insert naptime here*
we got to the show and the lady racers were just about to go on ... god damn that's some sweet 3 part harmony and wicked songs. although it might not be the most exciting show to watch live, you get sucked in by their voices and i never seem to care (i usually prefer if someone lights something on fire [an old matt good addage about showmanship] or shows their asscrack like erick turnbull did later on, makes for some excitement on stage).
derek got up and threw some shit down ... a bunch of new stuff and a couple of older tunes that reminded me of good times. always a total entertainer with or without a band.
erick turnbull said he was going to play a serious show of serious songs and be serious ... it lasted for the first instrumental piece with him flying around the fretboard slapping and pulling like mad...and then the filth started flying and holy fuck was it funny. derek and erick on the same bill was quite a demonstration of guitarin' and topped with the lady racers owning you with their voices ...a really great show.
shame on those of you that know derek and didn't make it out to the show ... live music only lives with your support |

the childcare debate... |
|
LISTENING TO: no means no - 0+2=1
with all the discussion surrounding childcare funding (LIB) vs baby bonus increases (PC) lately ...i just had to say something. giving parents another $100 month per child doesn't seem like the best solution to me (although i bet it swings the broke parent votes) ... but what a deal! that's another couple cases of beer each month to soothe the headaches of having offspring ...and those extra satelite channels you wanted too (they'll also help keep junior quiet while you fill out your proline forms).
i'm not usually a very political guy (although i would like to see a little bit of change on some very antiquated statutes) but as a double-income-no-kids family (yup, we're dinks) we pay a good chunk of tax and see nothing in the way of breaks from the gov't for not procreating. i'm going to ask my tax person if you actually have to HAVE a baby to get a baby bonus or if the gov't counts just having sex as 'close enough'.
create some jobs in childcare ... control the output of the funding and demonstrate some accountability ...i'm not sure if throwing more money to parents and hoping they do the right thing with it every month is the greatest idea. i don't have enough faith in most parents ...come to think of it i don't have much faith in the gov't either. so wtf am i talkin' about?¿
maybe we'll have a baby ... great tax break and they don't depreciate either. if we get bored with it we can always sell it ... that's popular on the internet these days. |

we still miss john lennon. |
|
LISTENING TO: dear prudence - our lady peace version
there's a small inscription carved into the aging brickwork arch covering the 'boys' entrance to an old elementary school in my hometown that reads 'we'll miss you john' scattered amongst misc love declarations and sports team grafiti. every year on this day i think about that wall and seeing it for the first time when i was in grade 1 ...going toboggoning on the hill behind that school tomorrow night ...25 years ago.
i hope it's still there when i go home to visit this christmas. i have to have a picture of it. |

LISTENING TO: Coldplay - Fix You (Live DVD 2005)
woohoo ... i got a temp part-time job for the holidays. i'm back in kitchen whites a few days a week at casa helping out for the christmas party season.
it was kinda weird to go back to a job i got fired from, but being asked back felt good, even if only for a short time. sometimes a bad situation works out o.k. in the end.
it's great to be working with robbie g again too ...that guy rocks. |
